God’s mercy is the focus of this segment. What is mercy? A website, www.compassion.com defines it as the compassionate treatment of those in distress, especially when it is within one’s power to punish or harm them. The word derives from the medieval Latin ‘merced’ or ‘merces’, which means, “price paid.” It has the connotation of forgiveness, benevolence and kindness. Isn’t this true for all of us? God’s mercy comes through the sacrifice of His Son on the cross to atone for our sin. We do not receive mercy because we deserve it; we are shown mercy because someone else paid the price for our rebellion against God and His holiness. We are not only shown mercy by God; Scripture asserts that we can only receive it if we are merciful towards others. “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy” (Mathew 5:7).
