Harmful Effects of Prolonged Use of Makeup: Makeup has become part of the daily routine of most women. The idea behind its usage is the belief that we are not perfect without enhancing our looks. Of course, many women do look different in a positive way if the makeup is applied by professionals, while others end up becoming “works of art” due to the clash of many colours on their faces. This article is not advocating stoppage of the use of makeup, but it draws attention to its side effects. According to megawecare.com, common side effects are:
- Clogged pores
- Skin irritation and allergies
- Dryness and dehydration
- Premature aging
- Uneven skin tone
- Acne Cosmestica
- Eye irritation
- Lip dryness and chapping
- Pore enlargement
- Increased skin sensitivity
Remedies
- Clogged pores – Clean your face thoroughly to remove the residue of makeup;
- Skin irritation and allergies – Choose products that are suited to your skin;
- Dryness and dehydration – Products containing alcohol can cause dryness and dehydration. Avoid them;
- Premature aging – The type of products used in makeup routine can contribute to premature aging, especially those containing fragrances, preservatives, parabens. They can also act as skin irritants, as well as make fine lines, wrinkles, and saggy skin more prominent;
- Uneven skin tone – The collagen breakdown that happens when makeup is left on for too long can cause discolouration in certain areas of the face. Also, if pores are clogged for too long, it can lead to breakouts, redness, scars and pigmentation;
- Acne Cosmestica – Literally known as acne caused by cosmetic products, this side effect is usually visible on the face, neck and hairline. It occurs when products block skin pores or hair follicles leading to the build-up of excess oil and noticeable bumps (whiteheads, blackheads, pimples) around the affected area;
- Eye irritation – This could result from the use of eyeliners, eye shadows, concealers and foundations;
- Lip dryness or chapping – Just like the face, the lip is also susceptible to irritants in cosmetic products containing ingredients like dyes, fragrances, menthol, citrus or preservatives;
- Pore enlargement – Makeup is bad for your skin only when you use products containing harsh ingredients. Also, products like foundation can mix with the dirt and sebum produced from the day to clog pores, causing them to enlarge the next day;
- Increased skin sensitivity – These aforementioned side effects can make your skin even more sensitive and prone to acne, eczema and other skin diseases. Also, the use of toxic makeup or expired products can strip and weaken your skin’s natural protective barrier.
