Potpourri –God’s Grace: Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me, written by John Newton in late 18th century captures the emotion of everyone that has encountered the living God through His Son Jesus Christ. But what is grace? Many believers have given their own understanding of this unique word. Some believe that it is God’s unmerited favour, while others see it as God’s gift of love and forgiveness.
An explanation by a website, https://www.desiringgod.org comes very close to my understanding of the word. It says, “Grace is not only a disposition or a quality or an inclination in the nature of God, but is an influence or a force or a power or an acting of God.” What I received while typing this article is that grace is God’s strength; and that only the Holy Spirit dispenses it to believers.
No one can be saved without grace, and no one can continue in the Christian race without grace. Ephesians 2:8 declares, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves; it is the gift of God; not by works that any one may boast.” We are also preserved by grace: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness…..” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).
